Weekly News and Announcements

Weekly News and Announcements for October 9th-13th

On Friday, Oct. 27, all district 5th graders will be taking a field trip to NPHS Auditorium to see the Dallas Brass perform! Students will be departing Raven Stream at 11am, and arriving back at approximately 12:50pm for lunch and recess at school. Here is a little more information about the Dallas Brass:

Since its founding in 1983 by Michael Levine, the Dallas Brass has become one of America’s foremost musical ensembles.  The group has established a unique blend of traditional brass instruments with a full complement of drums and percussion, which creates a performing entity of extraordinary range and musical challenges.  The Dallas Brass repertoire includes classical masterpieces, Dixieland, swing, Broadway, Hollywood and patriotic music.
For more information, videos, and music recordings of the Dallas Brass, please check out their website: http://dallasbrass.com/

Superhero of the Week: A huge thank you to Caleb for helping out this past week as our classroom Superhero. Teva will take over this short week and next week.

FALL HARVEST PARTY:  5th grade will celebrate fall by having our Halloween Party on Tuesday, October 31st in the afternoon.  As a yearly tradition, 5th graders will dress as the 1950's.  This is something that we don't need you to go out and spend money on!  Boys can simply wear a white t-shirt and rolled jeans!  If you have a pair of sunglasses or an old leather jacket laying around...great!  Girls can wear poodle shirts, or any type of flowing skirt with a button up shirt!  High pony-tails in her hair and a light weight scarf and you have a costume for her as well!  Dressing up is optional, but we will not allow other styles of costumes.  Thanks!

RED RIBBON WEEK:  Students at Raven Stream will celebrate Red Ribbon Week Oct. 23-27th.  Each day, staff will talk to students about drug and alcohol awareness. The first Red Ribbon Awareness day begin in 1988. Today, the Red Ribbon serves as a catalyst to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities. Since that time, the campaign has reached millions of U.S. children and families. The National Family Partnership (NFP) and its network of individuals and organizations continue to deliver the message of hope to millions of people every year, through the National Red Ribbon Campaign

We will have the following dress up days that are optional for students:

Monday, Oct. 23rd:  "Follow your Dreams" PJ day

Tuesday, Oct. 24th- "Catch the Wave of a Bully and Drug Free Life" -Hawaiian Day

Wednesday, Oct. 25th- "United we Stand Against Drugs" -Red, white and blue day

Thursday, Oct. 26th- "Don't let Drugs Mix you up" - Mismatch Day

Friday, Oct. 27th- "Good Choice Day" -Trojan Day

Classroom Week at a Glance

Math:   We have started Unit 2 and will cover only one standard: adding and subtracting by 0.1, 0.01, and 0.001.  Students will not have a Unit test on these objectives but will take a quiz before moving onto Unit 3.  In Unit 3 we will continue focusing on decimals. We will compare, order and add and subtract decimals.  Continue encouraging your child to practice their multiplication facts.

Spelling: There is no spelling this short week.  On Wednesday, students will be given the Unit 6 list and worksheet to work on for the following week!  With the 5 extra days, I am hoping for great spelling scores and worksheets turned in on time.

Social Studies: This week in social studies, students will get back their Unit 1 test.  Students are encouraged to make test corrections for points back toward their overall grade.  We will also begin our next unit, Native Americans.  We will begin by talking about the first Natives that come way of the landbridge between Russia and Alaska.  We will discuss why they came and what happened to the landbridge years later.

Reading & Science will be taught by Mrs. Ilkka.  Please see her webpage @ http://www.npaschools.org/users/cilkka and then click on Weekly Annoucements! for up-to-date classroom information for these subject areas.
