News and Announcements

The Falcon Ridge Food Drive – Students are encouraged to help restock the Peace Center food shelf for the holiday season. During lunchtime, boxes will be available for students to drop off non-perishable food and/or toiletry items. Please make sure the items are not expired. Thank you for your generosity.

Holiday Sharing- Thanks to all of your generous donations we reached our $80.00 goal for holiday sharing! Our class is raising money to purchase snow pants, winter boots, and tennis shoes for a 3-year-old boy. Thank you!

Student Intern- Our class is happy to welcome a student from NP high school who will be a student intern in our class until winter break. She will be joining our class for 1 hour a day during our reading block. She is part of a class at the HS called Career Exploration and is thinking of possibly becoming a teacher in the future. Welcome Ms. Holbach! 

What we learning in 2nd grade…

Reading- This week we are reading a fiction text called A Turkey for Thanksgiving. We will talk about how we can contribute to a celebration. Students will practice making predictions and drawing conclusions while they read. We will also work on answering who, what, when, where, and how questions.

Math- This week in math we will practice gathering data and creating a table and bar graph. We will also practice reading and answering questions using pictographs. We will also learn to solve Frames-and Arrows problems having two rules and continue to practice time and money.

Spelling- We will not have spelling words this week because it is a three-day week.

Mon., Nov. 12- Gym. Veterans Day program 9:15AM. Wear red, white, and blue.

News and Announcements

The Falcon Ridge Food Drive will take place Monday and Tuesday November 19-20.  

Holiday Sharing- This year we will continue the FR tradition of collecting money to purchase gifts for families in need. The suggested donation is $3 per student (or whatever the individual family chooses). Donations should be brought to school by Monday, November 19th. I am looking for a parent volunteer who would be willing to shop for gifts requested by our Holiday Sharing child. Please contact me by phone or email if you are willing and able to help shop.

What we learning in 2nd grade…

Reading- This week we are reading a fiction text called Tara and Tiree, Fearless Friends. It is a story about two courageous dogs that rescue someone from a hazardous situation. We will talk about what we can do in a dangerous situation. Students will identify how the characters in a story respond to a challenge and sequence events in a story. We will also practice finding examples of cause and effect in text.

Math- This week in math we will be wrapping up and testing unit 2. Unit 3 will focus on place value, money, and time.

Spelling- Our spelling pattern for this week is r-controlled vowels: ar, or, ore.

 

The week of Oct. 22-26 Red Ribbon Week: Bully and Drug Free Week (dress up days)

Mon., Oct. 22- Music. Show your pride…be bully and drug free. Wear school colors- red/black or Trojan gear.

Tues., Oct. 23- Gym. I pledge to be drug free! Wear red, white, and blue

Wed., Oct. 24- Art. Team up against drugs and bullying. Wear sports gear.

Thurs., Oct. 25- Gym. Be all you can be…bully and drug free. Wear camo.

Fri., Oct. 26- Media. Follow your dreams, don’t do drugs or bully. Wear PJs.

Spooky Reading- On Tuesday, October 30 we will have a spooky reading time in our class. Students may bring a blanket, flashlight, and a small stuffed animal.

Harvest Party- Our Harvest party is scheduled for 1:00-1:45 PM on Wednesday, October 31st. Students may bring a nonviolent costume to change into for the party. No face paint or hair color please.

What we learning in 2nd grade…

Reading/Science- This week we are reading a nonfiction text called Life Cycle of a Pumpkin. We will talk about how plants change as they grow. Students will practice identifying fact and opinion statements. They will also work on asking and answering questions about what they read. We will conduct a fun science experiment as we watch what happens to a pumpkin as it rots.

Spelling- Our spelling pattern this week is words with consonant blends.

Health- During red ribbon week we will discuss making healthy choices. Students will read and discuss topics including; how to use medicines safely, the harmful effects of drugs, the importance of refusing and avoiding drugs, and how to recognize/prevent bullying.  

Math- In math students will learn tricks to increase their fluency with basic subtraction facts, write addition/subtraction fact families, and represent numbers in multiple way using name collection boxes.

Reading- This week we are reading a fiction text called Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night. We will talk about what we can discover by exploring nature. We will continue to examine character and setting in a text. We will review strategies that help readers monitor and fix-up while they are reading.

Math- In math students have learned strategies to help them solve basic addition facts including +0 facts, +1 facts, doubles facts, and near doubles facts. Students learned the turn-around rule for addition. This week we will start working on subtraction facts and fact families.

Spelling- We will not have new spelling words this week since it is a three-day week, but in class we will begin working on our next skill: words with consonant blends.

What we learning in 2nd grade…

Reading- This week we will learn about fire safety as part of fire prevention week. We will read a nonfiction text called Firefighter! We will talk about why being a firefighter is an important job. We will work identifying the topic, main idea, and details in nonfiction text. Students will also compare and contrast firefighting today with firefighting long ago in this week’s Scholastic News.

Math- In math students are building their “fact power”! We are learning tricks and strategies to memorize our basic facts. This week we will focus on doubles facts, turn around facts, and the +9 shortcut.

Spelling- Our spelling pattern for this week is words with long vowels (CVCe).

Reminders:

Harvest Party Volunteers needed- On Wednesday, October 31st we look forward to celebrating together as a second grade class for our fall harvest party. WE’D LOVE YOUR HELP!  Would you be willing to set up a game, activity, or craft in the multi-purpose gym (by the library) or in our classrooms and second grade hallway “carnival style”?  If you are interested in volunteering to help with the party, please return the green form sent home with your child or call/email Mrs. Clark.  We are looking for activities that allow students to “roam” around. A few ideas from past years include: drop the ghost in the caldron, face painting, musical haunted chairs, bowling, bingo, guess how many ___ in the jar, various arts and crafts, or other games.

What we learning in 2nd grade…

Reading- This week we’re reading a nonfiction text called Exploring Space with an Astronaut. We will practice identifying text features and discuss how they help us learn more in a nonfiction text. We will also work on identifying the topic and main idea of a nonfiction text.

Math-  We are coming to the end of our first math unit. Our first unit was a review of important 2nd grade skills including; number writing, number line/number grid patterns, calendars, time, and counting coins. Unit 2 will focus on addition and subtraction facts.

Writing- We have been working on writing in our Life books and handwriting.

Student of the Month- Congratulations to our September student of the month Addyline! Each month FR classroom teachers will select one student from their classroom who demonstrates Respect, Effort, a positive Attitude, and Pride in their learning and school. The students of the month is someone that has done an exceptional job of demonstrating the month’s character trait. Our character trait in September was kindness. We read many book and did several activities encouraging kindness. Our October character trait is perseverance.

Reminders:

Party Money- If you haven’t sent in $5.00 party money for your second grader please do so as soon as possible. These funds help cover the cost of supplies for our holiday parties and other celebrations/activities throughout the year.

Dress for Recess- On colder days please make sure your child comes to school with a jacket for recess.

What we learning in 2nd grade…

Reading- We will continue to focus on character and setting in the books we read. Students will identify characters (main and supporting) and setting(s) in their independent reading books. We will talk about how the characters respond to challenges. We continue to work on building our reading stamina. As a class we are almost up to 15 min. of reading without getting distracted or giving up.

Math- We have been learning the expectations for and practicing math rotations. During math rotations students work on independent math activities while Mrs. Clark is working with a small group on math skills. We have also been working on comparing numbers.

Life book (writing journal)-  Students started writing in their life book this week. This is a place for students to write about all of the exciting things happening in their 2nd grade life. Your child may bring in photographs, ticket stubs, or other small items to tape into their life book as a memento of a special occasion. These items provide great inspiration for things to write about. Students may bring their life book home upon request to write in it at home. If your child chooses to bring home their life book, please make sure they bring it back to school the next day.  

Thank You!- Thank you to everyone who ordered books through Scholastic book orders in September. Thanks to your support we were able to add several new books to our classroom library. See the attached picture for the fun new additions.

What we learning in 2nd grade…

Reading- This week we will read about and discuss different types of communities (rural, suburban, and urban). We will begin reading a story called Iris and Walter about a little girl who moves from the city to the country. We will review character and setting and discuss how characters in a story respond to challenges.

Phonics- Our phonics pattern for the week is short vowel sounds. Students will read, sort, and write words with short vowels.

Math- Students have been working on recognizing number patterns using number lines, number grids, and the calendar. We reviewed the names and values of coins and practiced counting small groups of coins. We are reviewed telling time to the hour and half hour. Students have started working towards their number writing goal of writing numbers to 1,000.

Dozinky- This week we will read a story called Eva’s Summer Vacation: A Story of the Czech Republic. We will learn some Czech words and complete a Czech coloring/activity packet. I will share some of the souvenirs that I brought back from my trip to Prague this past summer (a flag, coins, and pictures). On Friday 2nd grade students will get a chance to dance with a Polka band in the big gym.

Reminders:

The Brain Power Walk/Run will be Saturday at 8:00 at the Trojan Stadium.  Sign-up is not open online but will be accepted at the gate. Any students that participates in the Brain Power Walk/Run will earn an extra recess with Mr. Giesen and be entered into a drawing for other prizes. Inflatables, prizes and snacks will available on Saturday.

Back to School- During our first weeks of school we focus on team building and establishing classroom routines and expectations. We learn our school wide expectations of showing REAP (Respect, Effort, Attitude, Pride) and being a team that CARES (Cooperation, Assertion, Responsibility, Empathy, Self-Control).  Students will have minimal homework during the first couple weeks, so it is the perfect time to start a nightly reading routine with your child. Second graders are encouraged to read at least 15 minutes a night.

Book Orders- Thank you in advance for considering placing orders from Scholastic book orders this year. When you order books our class gets bonus points that I use to order books for our classroom library. There are extra bonus point incentives during the month of September, so your order goes even further towards helping us build and improve our classroom library.  If we place a class order of $300 or more we could earn 10,000 bonus points. September book orders are due Monday, 9/10. This year if you place an online order of $25 or more you'll get to pick a free book. Orders can be placed online at scholastic.com/bookclubs our class code is HWT97 or by returning the order form. Make checks payable to SCHOLASTIC (no cash please).

Lunch Schedule Correction- 2nd grade lunch/recess is 12:00-12:35 PM, not 12:06 as is listed on the classroom calendar. Sorry for any confusion.

What we are learning in 2nd grade…

Reading- We are building our reading stamina. Stamina is being able to do something for a long time without getting distracted or giving up.  We have explored our classroom library and picked books for our classroom book bins.

Math-We have been reviewing number line patterns and counting coins. Look for the Unit 1 Family Letter to give you more information on what we will be learning in our first math unit.

Reminders:
