Paul Flick Silver Apple Award

In New Prague Area Schools, service is more than a responsibility. It is a core value that shapes the district’s culture and performance each day. From classrooms and offices to hallways, buses, and cafeterias, countless acts of care and dedication take place each day. Every year, these efforts are celebrated through the Paul Flick Silver Apple Award, a meaningful recognition that honors staff members whose service leaves a lasting impact on students, colleagues, and the broader school community.

Paul Flick dedicated his career to education as a teacher, coach, and administrator, first starting in Cleveland, Minnesota before coming to New Prague in 1967. He went on to serve as the junior high principal for more than two decades, remaining in that role until his retirement in 1993. Known for his steady leadership and genuine care for others, Mr. Flick earned the respect of colleagues and families alike. He believed strongly in supporting others and building relationships, values that guided his work and continue to influence the culture of New Prague Area Schools today.

In honor of Paul’s legacy, the New Prague School District established the Paul Flick Silver Apple Award in 2015. The award is presented annually to a single outstanding individual who exemplifies the same values Paul Flick lived by: humility, dedication, and service. While the award carries his name, it also serves to recognize the shared spirit of kindness and assistance reflected across the district. It operates as a celebration of service and highlights the many ways staff members contribute to a positive, supportive, and caring school community.

One of the defining aspects of the Paul Flick Silver Apple Award is its inclusivity. The award is open to all employees of District 721, regardless of position, title, or years of service. Teachers, administrators, paraprofessionals, custodians, food service workers, bus drivers, and office staff are all equally eligible for nomination. This reflects the district’s belief that every role plays an essential part in supporting students and maintaining a strong school system.

Nominations for the award are submitted by colleagues who recognize exceptional service in others. Staff members are invited to complete a nomination form describing the qualities and actions that make a nominee deserving of the Paul Flick Silver Apple Award. These nominations often highlight the everyday moments that make a difference: quiet leadership, consistent kindness, teamwork, and a willingness to go above and beyond without always receiving recognition are all fundamental qualities.

Recipients are selected by an anonymous panel of district staff members chosen by New Prague Area Schools. The selection process involves careful review and thoughtful discussion, with a focus on long-term impact rather than a single achievement. The process is described by Tony Buthe, Director of Educational Services and Human Resources, as “an art, not a science,” recognizing that service cannot always be measured and may reflect contributions made over many years. The committee represents a variety of buildings and professions, working together to reach a shared consensus.

Past recipients have shared that receiving the Paul Flick Silver Apple Award is a deeply meaningful experience. Past award winner Shawn Brandt described the honor as special not only because of Paul Flick’s legacy, but because of the people associated with the award. He emphasized that the recognition reflects teamwork, service, and the collective efforts of staff working together to support one another. Another past recipient, Pat Pribyl, spoke of Paul Flick as a personal and professional role model, crediting him as a major influence and contributor throughout his career. Mr. Pribyl noted that Paul Flick “set the bar” for leadership, service, and caring for people, and expressed gratitude for having had the opportunity to learn and work alongside him.

The Paul Flick Silver Apple Award is presented during the district’s end of the year celebration, a gathering that brings together nearly 500 staff members across New Prague Area Schools. The recipient is kept a surprise, with family members invited to attend and waiting behind the stage. As the recipient’s story is shared and their family joins them, the moment becomes especially emotional and meaningful. Rosanne Flick, Paul’s wife, provides the district with the award each year and continues to proudly honor her husband’s legacy and the values he stood for along with the rest of their family.

Through the Paul Flick Silver Apple Award, New Prague Area Schools continues a proud tradition of honoring those who humbly serve others. The award not only preserves Paul Flick’s legacy, but also reinforces the district’s commitment to gratitude, respect, and community. Each year, it serves as a reminder that service matters and that the people who dedicate themselves to others are at the heart of the district’s success.
