A Message From The Superintendent
Dear NPAS Families,
On behalf of the New Prague Area Schools, I extend warm greetings and hope our latest communication finds you and your family well. Next week, we will be celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week throughout the NPAS. As we approach the home stretch of this academic year, I encourage you to take a moment to send a note of appreciation to one of the talented, dedicated educators who have made a positive impact on your family. These small tokens of appreciation go a long way in maintaining the positive working relationships that exist between our schools/district and families.
Over the past several months, the school board and district administration have been discussing options for stabilizing the district’s long-term finance projections and limiting the need for budget reductions. If necessary, these reductions could include, but not be limited to, increasing class sizes at all grade levels; reductions to transportation services resulting in increased walking distances for students at all grade levels; and moving away from the 7-period day model at both the middle and high school. As part of its discussions, the board has considered the following three options:
- Do nothing
- Wait for state/federal funding increases
- Seek local funding through operating levy or other options
While time was spent on discussing each option, the first two options - do nothing and wait for state/federal funding increases - would have likely brought the need to establish a process to reduce the district’s budget for the 2026-2027 school year, with the work beginning in fall 2025. Seeking additional funding through a local levy was the most viable option and our best chance to avoid budget reductions.
For seeking additional funding through local sources, the board is considering the following:
- An operating levy to be used to maintain current programs and staff positions, to generate $2 million per year for 10 years for a total of $20 million
- A building bond levy to be used for maintenance projects and safety and security at district schools, to generate $20-$30 million
As the board discussions continue, the district will now be conducting a community survey to solicit insights from parents and community members about these funding options. Results from the survey will be used to help the board make decisions about how to proceed. The current timeline has the board deciding about the details of a November 2025 referendum election at the June board meeting.
More information will be shared in the coming weeks as it becomes available. Feel free to reach out to me or another member of our team if you have any questions or comments between now and then.
Thank you for your continued, enthusiastic support of the New Prague Area Schools!
Sincerely, Andrew Vollmuth

All Kindergartners will be routed to and from their home addresses. If they don't need transportation or need it from somewhere other than home, please fill out a transportation registration form.
