A Message From The Superintendent
Dear Families,
I extend warm greetings on behalf of the New Prague Area Schools and hope this latest communication finds you and your family well. It is hard to believe, but in just a few short weeks the Holiday Season will begin in earnest and we will pause to celebrate our annual Thanksgiving Break.
This is always a fun time in our schools, as I am sure it is for your family as well. We have much to be thankful for in the NPAS and thought it appropriate to share just a few of these highlights with you. Foremost, our schools are filled with wonderful students who can best be described as enthusiastic learners. Furthermore, we are fortunate to have dedicated staff who work tirelessly to ensure our students and families feel welcomed but also ensure our learners have access to a rigorous, high quality education. And due to the past support of our communities, our learning schools and facilities are high quality. Finally, as a school community, we are thankful for the active and enthusiastic engagement of our families in our schools.
Please join me in congratulating the following individuals who were chosen to serve our school district as members of the Board of Education: Incumbents Jean Schmidt, Kim Holden, Dennis Havlicek as well as our newest member, Carrie Cuff. All of these elected officials will begin their term in January and will serve a four term term ending in December of 2028.
Our successes are predicated on the active engagement of families and the greater community. With that in mind, thank you for your continued support of the New Prague Area Schools. Please feel free to reach out to me or another member of our school district if you have any comments or questions.
Regards,
Andrew Vollmuth

NPAS Severe Weather Decision-Making Process:
The NPAS’ Severe Weather Team’s goal is to minimize the loss of instructional time while being mindful of student and staff safety. In general, we will remain open. Canceling, delaying, or closing schools early poses significant issues for families with transportation and child-care arrangements.
Staff, students and families should always assume school is in session unless we communicate otherwise. If we decide to cancel school for the day, the decision will be communicated to staff and families no later than 5:30 a.m. or as soon as possible for early release or cold-weather cancellations.
Winter weather is extremely unpredictable and conditions can moderate or worsen very quickly. As a result, we constantly monitor the weather and conditions by relying on the following sources:
- National Weather Service and regional meteorologists provide us with frequent updates as it pertains to our communities
- Area public works and police departments for road conditions, plowing schedule and related impacts
- MN State Patrol for interstate and outlying road conditions
- Neighboring school districts to compare weather assessments and local decisions
While there is always pressure when surrounding districts cancel, delay, or close schools early, each school system considers its own unique conditions first. It’s good to know what other school districts are doing, but no other school district has the exact combination of roads or highways.
We realize not everyone will agree with our decision. However, we are deliberate and thorough in our process and decision-making as it impacts not only your child, but EVERY child in the school district. Caretakers are encouraged to use their judgment to determine what is best for their children. Ultimately, we make a final decision based on safety and the ability of our school buses to get students to and from school safely.
Blended Learning Day
A Blended Learning Day allows students to continue learning when school has been canceled due to inclement weather. Teachers provide lessons that may have a “blend” of online or traditional paper/pencil activities. If a student cannot complete the lessons due to an illness or other circumstance, their parent should call the attendance line to notify the school of their child's "absence." Reported absences will follow the same protocols as a regular school day. We encourage families to bookmark this site for future reference!
