Parental Curriculum Review Procedure

🌐 Reference: Minn. Stat. § 120B.20:  Parental Curriculum Review
📄 604 Instructional Curriculum

Per Minnesota Statute 120B.20, each school district shall have a procedure for a parent, guardian, or an adult student (18 years of age or older), to review the content of the instructional materials. If objections are made to the content, the school district shall make reasonable arrangements with school personnel for alternative instruction. Alternative instruction may be provided by the parent, guardian, or adult student if the alternative instruction, if any, offered by the school district does not meet the concerns of the parent, guardian, or adult student. The school district is not required to pay for the costs of alternative instruction provided by a parent, guardian, or adult student. School personnel may not impose an academic or other penalty upon a student merely for arranging alternative instruction. School personnel may evaluate and assess the quality of the student's work.

Procedure to review content of instructional materials:

  1. In a timely manner, contact the classroom teacher to review the course or unit outcomes and accompanying instructional resources. Discuss areas of concern to seek clarification.
  2. If concerns persist, contact the building principal. If necessary, the classroom teacher and building principal may work together to make reasonable arrangements for alternative instruction.
  3. If the concern is not addressed, contact the Director of Curriculum and Assessment to discuss a citizen’s request for reconsideration of materials.
  4. If the concern is still not addressed to your satisfaction, contact the Superintendent.
